The 2011 Emmy Awards took over Hollywood last night and some of the biggest names on the small screen as well as the big screen showed off their best Sunday wear on the red carpet. From vivid colors like crimson and cobalt blue to classic black, jewel tones and lace galore, the carpet was filled with fall’s biggest trends. Here’s a breakdown of the night’s best and worst looks.
Red was the night’s biggest color…
The winner in this category: As beautiful as all the ladies were, the best dressed award in this category goes to Kerry Washington. She looked so elegant and beautiful. She sparkled and stood out in the sea of reds and the fit of the dress was utter perfection. Her matching lips and retro-style hair were also perfectly in sync with her gorgeous Zuhair Murad dress.
All the shades of blue…

Katie Holmes in a cobalt blue Calvin Klein silk dress. Calvin Klein is all about the minimalist look these days and Katie definitely looks simple and elegant in this silk gown. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough for the Emmy’s.

Another underwhelming look of the night was Glee’s Diana Agron in an ill-fitting draped and belted cobalt blue silk gown.

Funny lady Amy Poehler stepped outside of her comfort zone in a glittering navy blue Peter Som. Unfortunately, this look didn’t do anything for her. It’s a very fitted dress that hugs her in all the wrong places.

Paula Abdul’s navy blue tiered lace dress had some potential but the ill-fitting top and unnecessary embellished silver belt threw the whole dress off.

Heather Morris bombed in this ruffled low-cut homecoming dance inspired dress and literally over the top bouffant style hair.
Other pops of color…
Pastels and jewel tones also ruled the carpet…

Boardwalk Empire’s Paz de la Huerta looked a little rough in a pink gown, gray lipstick and unbrushed hair.

Julianne Hough matched her dress to her skin tone in a pink, peach and black mermaid gown. The look unfortunately doesn’t work and looks like something Barbie tossed out.

Never one to blend in the crowd, Heidi Klum opts for nude tulle and ruffles. The jury’s still out on this number. The verdict on husband, Seal’s outfit is however very clear – This is the Emmys. Please button up. Thank you.

Maria Bello opted for an embellished one shoulder gown but her dress and hair were a little lack luster. Maybe it’s the geometric pattern on the dress or the combination of her falling waves and minimal makeup, it just doesn’t seem like she put any effort into her look.

Best Actress Winner, Julianna Marguiles failed to impress in this silver Armani Prive column gown. The stones attached to the bustier portion of the dress was just plain odd.
Worst dressed: Eva La Rue was the worst dressed in this category. The actress’ overly embellished peach dress was both unflattering for her figure and tanned skin.
Fade to black…

Best Actress in a Comedy Winner, Julie Bowen opted for an Oscar de la Renta gown with a plunging neckline.
After Party Trends…

90210’s Jessica Lowndes continued the “red trend” while attending the 15th Annual Entertainment Tonight Emmy Party at Vibiana.

Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland attended the EMMY nominees celebration with FOX Broadcasting Company in a white ruffled mini.

Necessary Roughness’ Andrea Anders attended Showtime’s 2011 Emmy Nominee Reception at SkyBar in a white and gray mini.

Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter attended Showtime’s 2011 Emmy Nominee Reception at SkyBar in a chic corseted black and silver mini.

While True Blood’s Anna Paquin opted for black and gold at HBO’s Annual Emmy Awards Post Award Reception.

While Claire Danes opted for a checkered pink and gray dress at Showtime’s 2011 Emmy Nominee Reception.

Marisol Nichols looked lovely in ruched lavender at the 15th Annual Entertainment Tonight Emmy Party.

The Big C’s Laura Linney went for gorgeous purple at Showtime’s 2011 Emmy Nominee Reception but the fit of the dress was so bad and it ended up being incredibly unflattering.
